Architects & Engineers' Professional Liability Coverage

Professional liability coverage for design firms, written around the errors and omissions claims that follow the drawings long after the project closes.

Your risk profile isn't standard. Neither is our approach.

As an engineer or architect, you operate in a meticulous, skilled industry where you are expected to deliver high-quality design services free from errors or omissions. Even minor mistakes can lead to significant consequences. If a client believes that damages result from your oversight, they may sue your company. It’s crucial to protect yourself against this potentially crippling liability. The expenses involved in defending yourself in court can be substantial, not to mention the restitution costs if you are found liable. An architects & engineers' professional liability policy can cover these expenses, which might otherwise threaten your business's financial stability.

Why This Requires Expertise

Architects & Engineers Risk Is Different. Your Insurance Should Be Too.

How the Policy Works

An architects & engineers’ professional liability policy covers the cost of defending you or your company in court, along with any monetary damages awarded to a claimant because of an error or omission on your part. The expenses of mounting that defense can be substantial on their own, before any question of restitution arises.

These are written as “claims-made” policies. Coverage is triggered when a claim is filed and reported to the insurer, rather than when the alleged error occurred, because pinpointing that moment in a design process is often impossible. Your coverage extends back to the earliest date of your uninterrupted professional liability insurance, which is why an unbroken chain of policies matters more in this line than almost any other.

Policies are typically issued for a one-year term, with an annual premium and deductibles applied on a per-claim basis.

What Is Not Covered

A professional liability policy generally excludes unfair trade practices, such as hiring a competitor’s employee and subsequently taking one of their clients; non-payment of fees or invoices; and willful or dishonest actions.

What We Cover

Coverage Designed for Architects & Engineers

Pollution Liability

Covers sudden, accidental, and gradual pollution conditions arising out of your professional services, an exposure many design-firm policies leave out by default.

Breach of Client Contract

Provides specific coverage for claims alleging you breached the terms of a client contract, distinct from ordinary negligence allegations.

Comprehensive Civil Liability

Extends beyond negligence alone to civil liability more broadly, closing the gap between what clients allege and what a narrow policy actually responds to.

Intellectual Property Rights

Protects against claims that your work breached another party’s intellectual property rights, a growing exposure as design assets move between firms and platforms.

Claim Mitigation Costs

Reimburses costs you incur to mitigate or prevent a claim, letting you act early on a developing problem instead of waiting for it to become a filing.

Punitive & Exemplary Damages

Covers punitive and exemplary damages where insurable, categories that standard professional liability wordings frequently carve out.

Virus & Hacking Liability

Provides liability coverage for viruses and hacking incidents affecting your systems and the project data your clients entrust to you.

Our Approach

An Independent Broker Who Works for You, Not the Carrier

What to Look For in a Policy

You may focus on specific areas of practice, but you likely manage a range of projects and services, and your policy should reflect that versatility. The components below are where design-firm policies most often differ from one another, and where a broker who knows the line earns their keep.

We review your coverage against the work your firm actually takes on, rather than the practice description on a renewal application, then take that picture to market and present the options with a clear analysis of where each one leaves you exposed.
